The US Navy's 100,000-ton nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman has been declared out of action indefinitely. She is the eighth Nimitz-class carrier to enter a refueling overhaul and starts the overhaul 3.5 years behind schedule. [1]
The evidence entries also note that steam turbine problems stretched USS George Washington's refueling overhaul from four years to six and left USS John C. Stennis 14 months late; similar problems may be waiting for Truman as well. [1]
In equipment history, Japan's WWII A-150 or 'Super Yamato'-class battleship design was to be armed with 20-inch main guns firing 4,300-pound shells; each gun weighed about 227 metric tons, each shell weighed 1,950 kilograms, and a twin turret weighed 2,780 tons. Japan destroyed the related records in 1945, and some of the partially built guns may have been scrapped; Yamato herself never fired on an American battleship. [2]
The US Navy Iowa-class battleship USS New Jersey displaces 57,500 tons, carries nine 16-inch main guns, earned 19 battle stars, was commissioned four times, served in four wars, and has been called the Navy's most decorated battleship. [3] At Truk in 1944, she became the only Iowa-class battleship to fire her main guns at enemy warships; during one deployment off Vietnam, she fired 5,688 16-inch shells, more than in World War II and Korea combined. Her last 13 rounds fell on Lebanon on February 26, 1984; she is now a museum in Camden. [3]
