Tesla's Roadster stunt debut, ChatGPT can read your Chrome tabs, and Withings puts health sync behind a subscription

Tesla's next-generation Roadster returned to the spotlight with a stunt show, OpenAI put ChatGPT inside Chrome tabs, and Withings locked health data syncing behind an annual subscription. At the same time, a game remaster with obvious AI artifacts was pulled from sale, and a 19-year-old founder used an influencer army to turn an AI calorie app into $30 million in revenue. Together, these threads sketch the current dilemma for AI hardware and software: capability narratives are still accelerating, but pricing models, entry points, and product quality control are becoming the variables that decide success.
Tesla Roadster: a stunt show fills in a launch delayed nine years
Tesla unveiled the next-generation Roadster at SpaceX's test site in McGregor, Texas. The car first climbed a C-shaped ramp and stopped midway up the section perpendicular to the ground, hanging upside-down. After repeating the move, it jumped off the top of the ramp, flipped, and hovered safely to the ground using its thrusters. Tesla later explained that a suction system at the bottom of the car, working with a multi-mode fan and ground sealing system, pulls air out from under the vehicle to generate downforce, allowing it to stick upside-down even when stationary. The jump and attitude control relied on rear thrusters; this cold-gas thruster system borrows technology from SpaceX and uses all-electric actuators that can make micro adjustments in less than a second. An Optimus robot sat in the driver's seat during the presentation, but only for show, and the stunts were pre-programmed. Musk said the new car will enter production in 2028.[1][5]
A $250,000 option: Roadster reservations and pricing
For people who want to reserve one, the pricing structure is also worth noting: the base version requires a $5,000 reservation fee, with an additional $45,000 due within 10 days. The Thrust package, with the suction system and accelerator thrusters, requires an additional $245,000 within 10 days of reservation; according to another report, the total reservation for the version with suction and accelerator thrusters is $250,000. The Rocket version, with full flight capability that can jump and hover, is available only to invited customers. Tesla began taking reservations when it first showed the concept prototype, and this round is aimed at users who did not get in earlier. The expensive options and invite-only access concentrate scarce capability among the small group most willing to pay, turning the Roadster from a car into a showcase for thruster technology.[5][1]
Withings: Apple Health sync moves behind an annual subscription
Withings' subscription policy change this week drew user complaints. According to a post on its support forum, the ability to sync data with Apple Health and other third-party apps has been placed into the Withings+ subscription: accounts created after October 13 must be Withings+ members to automatically sync information to Apple Health or similar platforms, and the plan costs $100 a year. Existing users do not appear to be affected. Most replies under the post came from longtime users criticizing the move to turn a relatively simple feature into an extra charge for new users. A response labeled as an official response from Withings confirmed the change, saying that automatic syncing to third-party apps after the 13th is part of Withings+. New free users who do not subscribe can only manually export and upload their historical data to view the latest data on other platforms. Withings is known for high-end smart health devices; its recently released Body Scan 2 scale costs $600, while the mid-range version costs $280, meaning a second bill beyond hardware is becoming part of its revenue structure.[2]
ChatGPT's Chrome extension: from chat window to tabs and sidebar
OpenAI's ChatGPT Atlas browser is gone, but ChatGPT's Chrome extension has received an upgrade and can now use the tabs a user already has open. OpenAI says that after installing the extension, users can tag Chrome in ChatGPT's web or desktop app and ChatGPT can view browser tabs; in an official demo video, someone asks ChatGPT to compare three open tabs with sofas they are considering buying. The sidebar has also been upgraded, bringing the full power of ChatGPT and the complete conversation history from Chat or Work so users can use it without leaving the current page. The extension also allows ChatGPT Work to control Chrome tabs to complete tasks such as sending messages, filling out forms, and downloading files, putting it close in form to Google's Gemini-powered auto browse feature, while also organizing or grouping open tabs. When an AI assistant reads tab content and has operational permissions, the definition of data boundaries and user authorization will become the next focus.[3]
Cal AI: a 19-year-old founder turns an influencer army into $30 million in revenue
Zach Yadegari, founder of the AI calorie tracking app Cal AI, described his growth path at TechCrunch Disrupt. Cal AI was founded in 2024, generated more than $30 million in revenue within two years, and was acquired by MyFitnessPal in March for an undisclosed amount. Yadegari is only 19 and recently graduated from high school. He said an early sign of success came when an influencer's post brought in about 1,000 new users in two days, after which the company began recruiting influencers as fast as possible and paying them to post. He said the playbook had a clear formula with near-linear results: each post generated a certain number of views and converted a certain number of users. Part of the strategy was negotiating influencer fees based on reach and emphasizing the need to find influencers with very tight communities. Earlier this month, he also launched Persona, an AI agent startup that has raised $10 million, with the goal of making computing and human life seamless; its personal AI assistant will appear anywhere with an internet connection, such as iMessage, apps, email, and phone calls, and the company plans to build a hardware ecosystem around the app.[4]
Sega pulls Total War: Shogun 2 remaster amid AI amplification controversy
Sega pulled Total War: Shogun 2 — Complete Edition from stores. The remaster of the 2011 strategy game launched on Tuesday, bundling the base game and all DLC and promising improved graphics, 1440p and 4K UI scaling, and modernized controls. But after release, users gave it an Overwhelmingly Negative rating on Steam, and the game was removed from Steam; posts on Reddit showed art assets users believed had been ruined by AI processing. Sega and developer Creative Assembly said in a statement that the release met neither players' expectations nor their own standards, and that they had seen the feedback, reviews, and ratings. The two companies said they will restore the original game, that existing owners can still access Complete Edition, and that they are working with development partners to identify the cause and push for improvements. The Steam page also listed another developer, Mataboo, whose website showed work on the project, making quality control in outsourcing a focus of discussion.[6]
Shared trend: the triple pressure of pricing, entry points, and quality control
Taken together, these threads show AI and smart hardware facing three kinds of pressure at the same time. The first is a redrawing of pricing: Withings put a syncing capability that used to work easily into an annual subscription, splitting hardware prices and software subscriptions into two bills; Tesla used expensive options and invite-only access to differentiate versions, selling scarce capability to the small group most willing to pay. The second is the battle over entry points: ChatGPT entering Chrome tabs and the sidebar means the AI assistant is turning from a standalone app into a persistent layer inside the browser. The third is the cost of distribution and quality control: Cal AI proved that an influencer army can efficiently amplify a lightweight AI app, while the removal of the Shogun 2 remaster reminds companies that once AI enters art and porting work, the bill for quality and trust still comes due to the publisher. Going forward, it is worth watching whether such subscription thresholds spread from new users to existing users, and how permissions and security boundaries will be defined once AI assistants inside browsers gain control over tabs.[1][2][3][4][6]
